ORAL CANCER 101
One of the most powerful differences you can make is to educate yourself, your family, and your friends about oral cancer.
REMEMBER, EARLY DETECTION HELPS SAVES LIVES
Oral cancer is particularly dangerous because in its early stages it may not be noticed by the patient, as it can frequently prosper without producing pain or symptoms they might readily recognize, and because it has a high risk of producing second, primary tumors.
When oral cancer is found early, through routine oral screenings and patient education, there is an 80% - 90% survival rate. However, due to a lack of public awareness, the majority of cases are found as late-stage cancers that drop the survival rate to 20-30%.
IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT ORAL CANCER IN THE U.S.
- Close to 37,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral or pharyngeal cancer this year.
- OC will cause over 8,000 deaths, killing roughly 1 person per hour, 24 hours per day.
- Of those 36,000 newly diagnosed individuals, only slightly more than half will be alive in 5 years. (Approximately 57%)

Tobacco and heavy smoking remain the primary risk factor for oral cancer.
- Previously, oral cancer was more limited to the smoking/alcohol habit portion of the population, with the risk group being those patients who smoked or had more than 15 alcoholic drinks per week
- Men are twice as likely to develop oral cancer, but these numbers are changing with the onset of HPV induced oral cancer
- The death rate associated with this cancer is particularly high not because it is hard to discover or diagnose, but due to the cancer being routinely discovered late in its development.
- Worldwide the problem is much greater, with over 640,000 new oral cancer cases being found each year.
